XMind ist die Mind Mapping Software, die ich seit längerem gesucht habe. Auf meiner ehemaligen Arbeitsstelle hatten wir den sehr teuren Mind Manager lizensiert. Privat hatte ich bisher FreeMind genutzt. Mindmaps mit XMind sind deutlich (!) intuitiver zu erstellen als mit FreeMind. Ich sehe sogar Vorteile gegenüber dem Mind Manager.

Xmind - First impressions about this new OS Mind Mapping initiative -- Marco Milani, PhD
I recently discovered XMind, a mind mapping software, formerly commercial and now branched into two versions: Open Source (published on sourceforge) and Professional (commercial).
I tried both the two versions of this software, however I'm interested in understanding if the Open Source version can actually replace Freemind, the mind mapping software I'm using in my everyday life.

I was intrigued when XMind announced that they were going to release their software to open source recently. What was up? Running out of money and looking for a way to keep the product live? Seeing more income from subscriptions rather than selling individual packages once, with occasional upgrades? Aiming at ad-income? Was the free version a 'come-on' for the full XMind Pro? Could this be the start of a trend with other mind mapping software?

XMind on the other hand does support the presentation of tabular data. And equally importantly for me it is available as a plug-in for the Eclipse IDE.
There is also an professional edition of XMind with additional features that might be useful in corporate and academic environments.
After trying both FreeMind and XMind I have settled on using XMind for my personal and professional projects and might even consider paying for the additional XMind Pro in the future.

I did have a license for the paid version, and I can tell you that it packs plenty of punch.
